Bk XXI:136-185 The Suitors try the bow

比賽即將展開,出場比賽的人員位置的示意圖如下,原則是 Antinous宣布的:
τοῖσιν δ᾽ Ἀντίνοος μετέφη, Εὐπείθεος υἱός:
‘ὄρνυσθ᾽ ἑξείης ἐπιδέξια πάντες ἑταῖροι,
ἀρξάμενοι τοῦ χώρου ὅθεν τέ περ οἰνοχοεύει.
(Odyssey 21. 140-142)

Then Antinous, Eupeithes’ son, addressed them: 
All you comrades, get up in order now,  
from left to right, beginning from the place
where the steward pours the wine.”

ἑξείης in order, one after another
ἐπιδέξιος towards the right

οἰνοχοεύω pour out wine for drinking,

所以就從位置遠遠的,對這群追求者也是不滿的Leiodes開始。顯然這人平日也很少練習或是運動,根本拉不開弓,失敗後說了一串預言:

ὦ φίλοι, οὐ μὲν ἐγὼ τανύω, λαβέτω δὲ καὶ ἄλλος.
πολλοὺς γὰρ τόδε τόξον ἀριστῆας κεκαδήσει
θυμοῦ καὶ ψυχῆς, ἐπεὶ ἦ πολὺ φέρτερόν ἐστι
155τεθνάμεν ἢ ζώοντας ἁμαρτεῖν, οὗθ᾽ ἕνεκ᾽ αἰεὶ
ἐνθάδ᾽ ὁμιλέομεν, ποτιδέγμενοι ἤματα πάντα.
νῦν μέν τις καὶ ἔλπετ᾽ ἐνὶ φρεσὶν ἠδὲ μενοινᾷ
γῆμαι Πηνελόπειαν, Ὀδυσσῆος παράκοιτιν.
αὐτὰρ ἐπὴν τόξου πειρήσεται ἠδὲ ἴδηται,
ἄλλην δή τιν᾽ ἔπειτα Ἀχαιϊάδων εὐπέπλων
μνάσθω ἐέδνοισιν διζήμενος: ἡ δέ κ᾽ ἔπειτα
γήμαιθ᾽ ὅς κε πλεῖστα πόροι καὶ μόρσιμος ἔλθοι.
(Odyssey 21.152-162)
   “My friends, I’m not the man to string this bow. So now,
let someone else take hold of it. This bow
will take away from many excellent men
their lives and spirits, since it’s far better
to die than live and fail in the attempt
to have what we are gathered here to get,
always waiting in hope day after day.
Now every man has feelings in his heart—
he desires and hopes to wed Penelope,
Odysseus’ wife. But when he’s tried this bow
and observed what happens, then let him woo
another of Achaea’s well-dressed women, 
seeking to win her with his bridal gifts,
and then Penelope can wed the man
who offers her the most, whose fate it is
to be her husband.”
說得很對,這弓箭不祥,將奪走很多人命;而且,Penelope還是會回到自己丈夫身旁。
   只是他說的預言有人聽嗎? 沒有。Antinous辯駁,「不能因為你做不到,就以為別人都做不到。」而且,Antinous還有點小聰明,把彎弓烘烤一下,塗抹油,弓變得比較光滑。可惜,還是沒用。

Bk XXI:80-135 Telemachus sets up the axes

ὣς φάτο, καί ῥ᾽ Εὔμαιον ἀνώγει, δῖον ὑφορβόν,
τόξον μνηστήρεσσι θέμεν πολιόν τε σίδηρον.
δακρύσας δ᾽ Εὔμαιος ἐδέξατο καὶ κατέθηκε:
κλαῖε δὲ βουκόλος ἄλλοθ᾽, ἐπεὶ ἴδε τόξον ἄνακτος.
      (Odyssey 21. 80-83)

When she’d said this,
she then told Eumaeus, the loyal swineherd,
to set the bow and gray iron axes for the suitors.
With tears in his eyes, Eumaeus picked them up
and laid them out. Philoetius, the goatherd,
was weeping, too, in another spot, once he saw
his master’s bow.
Odysseus的彎弓一亮相,就有兩個忠實的僕人流淚,豬倌Eumaeus和牧牛奴Philoetius 兩個大男人,這樣就哭? 有人笑他們傻,Antinous還說這兩位是大笨蛋(foolish bumpkinsνήπιοι ἀγροιῶταιOdyssey 21.86),我倒覺得史詩裡的人哭笑都很直接,就像小孩子一樣。

   這比賽很關鍵,必須一箭穿心,正確的書說法是,要穿過十二個心。雖然Antinous假裝謙虛一下,但內心真的很想順利安弦,然後一件穿越12座鐵斧。但,很難喔! 下面的圖示,可以幫助我們想像這比賽的難度:








Odyssey 21. 118-135描寫Telemachus是安弦四次都失敗,他的動作約略整理如下:
脫下紫色外袍
取下身上鋒利的配件
立起鐵斧
挖出長長的深溝
用垂線瞄直
周圍填土

然後安弦,用力拉弓,Telemachus試了四次都失敗,他比他的父親還遜色? 還是故意裝的?
ὢ πόποι, ἦ καὶ ἔπειτα κακός τ᾽ ἔσομαι καὶ ἄκικυς,
ἠὲ νεώτερός εἰμι καὶ οὔ πω χερσὶ πέποιθα
ἄνδρ᾽ ἀπαμύνασθαι, ὅτε τις πρότερος χαλεπήνῃ.
ἀλλ᾽ ἄγεθ᾽, οἵ περ ἐμεῖο βίῃ προφερέστεροί ἐστε,
τόξου πειρήσασθε, καὶ ἐκτελέωμεν ἄεθλον.
      (Odyssey 21. 131-135)

Well, I suppose I’ll remain a coward,
a weak man, too, in future days, or else
I’m still too young and cannot yet rely
on my own strength to guard me from a man  
who gets angry with me first. But come now,
you men who are more powerful than me,
test this bow. Let’s end this competition.”
坦白說,我並不喜歡Telemachus,總覺得他說話都太酸了。

Odyssey 21: 1-79 奧德賽的弓箭

第二十一卷,好戲登場,射箭大賽即將展開,Penelope準備拿出Odysseus家藏的彎弓和灰色鐵斧:

τῇ δ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἐπὶ φρεσὶ θῆκε θεὰ γλαυκῶπις Ἀθήνη,
κούρῃ Ἰκαρίοιο, περίφρονι Πηνελοπείῃ,
τόξον μνηστήρεσσι θέμεν πολιόν τε σίδηρον
ἐν μεγάροις Ὀδυσῆος, ἀέθλια καὶ φόνου ἀρχήν.
κλίμακα δ᾽ ὑψηλὴν προσεβήσετο οἷο δόμοιο,
εἵλετο δὲ κληῗδ᾽ εὐκαμπέα χειρὶ παχείῃ
καλὴν χαλκείην: κώπη δ᾽ ἐλέφαντος ἐπῆεν.
βῆ δ᾽ ἴμεναι θάλαμόνδε σὺν ἀμφιπόλοισι γυναιξὶν
ἔσχατον: ἔνθα δέ οἱ κειμήλια κεῖτο ἄνακτος,
χαλκός τε χρυσός τε πολύκμητός τε σίδηρος. (Odyssey 1-10)

Bright-eyed Athena then placed inside the heart
of wise Penelope, Icarius’ daughter,
the thought that she should set up in Odysseus’ halls
the bow and the gray iron axes for the suitors,
as a competition and the prelude to their deaths.
She climbed the lofty staircase to her chamber,
picked up in her firm grip a curved key made of bronze—
beautifully fashioned with an ivory handle.
With her attendants she went off to a storeroom
in a distant corner of the house, where they kept  
her king’s possessions—bronze and gold and iron, 
all finely crafted work.
這些器具應該是放在Odysseus宮殿的儲藏室,Penelope先上樓上她的房間拿鑰匙,這把鑰匙很特別: 彎曲,青銅製,象牙把手。然後到最遠的一間存放Odysseus收藏銅、金、鐵等撞要金屬與製品的儲藏室,這裡也可能是收藏武器的地方。

    Odysseus的弓真的太特別了,而且大有來頭:
ἔνθα δὲ τόξον κεῖτο παλίντονον ἠδὲ φαρέτρη
ἰοδόκος, πολλοὶ δ᾽ ἔνεσαν στονόεντες ὀϊστοί,
δῶρα τά οἱ ξεῖνος Λακεδαίμονι δῶκε τυχήσας
Ἴφιτος Εὐρυτίδης, ἐπιείκελος ἀθανάτοισι.
τὼ δ᾽ ἐν Μεσσήνῃ ξυμβλήτην ἀλλήλοιϊν
οἴκῳ ἐν Ὀρτιλόχοιο δαΐφρονος. ἦ τοι Ὀδυσσεὺς
ἦλθε μετὰ χρεῖος, τό ῥά οἱ πᾶς δῆμος ὄφελλε:
μῆλα γὰρ ἐξ Ἰθάκης Μεσσήνιοι ἄνδρες ἄειραν
νηυσὶ πολυκλήϊσι τριηκόσι᾽ ἠδὲ νομῆας.
τῶν ἕνεκ᾽ ἐξεσίην πολλὴν ὁδὸν ἦλθεν Ὀδυσσεὺς
παιδνὸς ἐών: πρὸ γὰρ ἧκε πατὴρ ἄλλοι τε γέροντες.
Ἴφιτος αὖθ᾽ ἵππους διζήμενος, αἵ οἱ ὄλοντο

ὅς μιν ξεῖνον ἐόντα κατέκτανεν ᾧ ἐνὶ οἴκῳ,

τὴν ἥν οἱ παρέθηκεν: ἔπειτα δὲ πέφνε καὶ αὐτόν,
ἵππους δ᾽ αὐτὸς ἔχε κρατερώνυχας ἐν μεγάροισι.
τὰς ἐρέων Ὀδυσῆϊ συνήντετο, δῶκε δὲ τόξον,
τὸ πρὶν μέν ῥ᾽ ἐφόρει μέγας Εὔρυτος, αὐτὰρ ὁ παιδὶ
κάλλιπ᾽ ἀποθνῄσκων ἐν δώμασιν ὑψηλοῖσι.
τῷ δ᾽ Ὀδυσεὺς ξίφος ὀξὺ καὶ ἄλκιμον ἔγχος ἔδωκεν,
ἀρχὴν ξεινοσύνης προσκηδέος: οὐδὲ τραπέζῃ
γνώτην ἀλλήλων: πρὶν γὰρ Διὸς υἱὸς ἔπεφνεν
Ἴφιτον Εὐρυτίδην, ἐπιείκελον ἀθανάτοισιν,
ὅς οἱ τόξον ἔδωκε. τὸ δ᾽ οὔ ποτε δῖος Ὀδυσσεὺς
ἐρχόμενος πόλεμόνδε μελαινάων ἐπὶ νηῶν
ᾑρεῖτ᾽, ἀλλ᾽ αὐτοῦ μνῆμα ξείνοιο φίλοιο
κέσκετ᾽ ἐνὶ μεγάροισι, φόρει δέ μιν ἧς ἐπὶ γαίης. (Odyssey 11-41)

His well-sprung bow was there,
and quivers, too, with lots of painful arrows,
gifts he had received from Iphitus, his friend,
son of Eurytus, a man like the immortals,
when they’d met in Lacedaemon, in Messene,
at the home of wise Ortilochus. Odysseus
had gone there to collect a debt the people owed—
Messenian men had run off with three hundred sheep
and seized the shepherds, too, leaving Ithaca
in their ships with many oars. Because of this,
Odysseus, who was just a boy, had been sent
a long way by his father and other senior men,
part of an embassy. Iphitus was searching
for twelve mares he’d lost and sturdy mules, as well,
still on the teat. Later on these animals
led him to a fatal destiny, the day he met
the mortal Hercules, Zeus’ great-hearted son,
who knew all there was to know about great exploits.
Hercules slaughtered him, although he was a guest 
in his own home—a cruel man who didn’t care
about the anger of the gods or the dining table
he’d set before him. After their meal, he killed him
and kept the strong-hoofed mares with him at home
for his own use. While Iphitus was enquiring
about these horses, he got to meet Odysseus
and gave him the bow. In earlier days, this weapon
had been used by mighty Eurytus, and when he died,
he’d left it for his son in his high-roofed home.
Odysseus had given him a keen-edged sword
and a powerful spear, as well. This was the start
of their close friendship. But they never bonded
as mutual dinner guests—before that happened
Zeus’ son had murdered Iphitus, son of Eurytus,
a man like the immortals, who gave Odysseus
that bow of his. Lord Odysseus never took it
whenever he went off to war in his black ships.
It lay there in his home as a memorial 
to a dear friend. He carried it in his own land.
這一套箭弓,還有箭壺,可裝好幾支箭,但也裝著無限悲愴,武器無情,多少生死都在一箭之間!
  接下來的故事,說出這箭的典故,總之,是OdysseusIphitus交換的禮物,是友情的象徵,也是hospitality的展現。28-29行提到τράπεζα,是餐桌,也是待客之展現。

    故事說完,回頭看Penelope走進木製樸實的門檻,用鑰匙打開門,因為久未使用,還發出聲響,最後,Penelope正式宣布射箭大賽:
κέκλυτέ μευ, μνηστῆρες ἀγήνορες, οἳ τόδε δῶμα
ἐχράετ᾽ ἐσθιέμεν καὶ πινέμεν ἐμμενὲς αἰεὶ
ἀνδρὸς ἀποιχομένοιο πολὺν χρόνον: οὐδέ τιν᾽ ἄλλην
μύθου ποιήσασθαι ἐπισχεσίην ἐδύνασθε,
ἀλλ᾽ ἐμὲ ἱέμενοι γῆμαι θέσθαι τε γυναῖκα.
ἀλλ᾽ ἄγετε, μνηστῆρες, ἐπεὶ τόδε φαίνετ᾽ ἄεθλον.
θήσω γὰρ μέγα τόξον Ὀδυσσῆος θείοιο:
ὃς δέ κε ῥηΐτατ᾽ ἐντανύσῃ βιὸν ἐν παλάμῃσι
καὶ διοϊστεύσῃ πελέκεων δυοκαίδεκα πάντων,
τῷ κεν ἅμ᾽ ἑσποίμην, νοσφισσαμένη τόδε δῶμα
κουρίδιον, μάλα καλόν, ἐνίπλειον βιότοιο,
τοῦ ποτὲ μεμνήσεσθαι ὀΐομαι ἔν περ ὀνείρῳ.
              (Odyssey 21. 68-79)

Listen to me, bold suitors, who’ve been ravaging this home
with your incessant need for food and drink,
since my husband’s now been so long absent. 
The only story you could offer up
as an excuse is that you all desire
to marry me and take me as your wife. 
So come now, suitors, since I seem to be
the prize you seek, I’ll place this great bow here
belonging to godlike Odysseus. And then,
whichever one of you can grip this bow
and string it with the greatest ease, then shoot
an arrow through twelve axes, all of them,
I’ll go with him, leaving my married home,
this truly lovely house and all these goods
one needs to live—things I’ll remember,
even in my dreams.”
 這就是有名的一箭穿十二心,誰做到,就可以娶Penelope。聽起來很簡單? 接下來就看群無賴,一一失敗。

these type of battle-axe are also attested in other Achaean settlements. With these specimens we can understand the feat of Odysseus in sending an arrow through the rings of twelve axes set up in a row (*2)

Odyssey 20. 345-394 嘲笑

Bk XX:345-394 Theoclymenus’ vision

本卷最後一小段,我認為主題是: (laugh)。風雨欲來,但,狂妄無知的人,仍沒察覺,繼續狂歡,嘻笑怒罵。這群求婚者,看似忘了遵守作客之道,但最大的問題是,太自滿,輕視他人,失去生活中應有的優雅,也引來殺生之禍。

ὣς φάτο Τηλέμαχος: μνηστῆρσι δὲ Παλλὰς Ἀθήνη
ἄσβεστον γέλω ὦρσε, παρέπλαγξεν δὲ νόημα.
οἱ δ᾽ ἤδη γναθμοῖσι γελοίων ἀλλοτρίοισιν,
αἱμοφόρυκτα δὲ δὴ κρέα ἤσθιον: ὄσσε δ᾽ ἄρα σφέων
δακρυόφιν πίμπλαντο, γόον δ᾽ ὠΐετο θυμός.
(Odyssey 20. 345-350)

Once Telemachus had spoken, Pallas Athena
roused them all to laugh with no sense of control.
She unhinged their minds, so laughter from their mouths
came from an alien source, and the meat they ate
became blood-spattered. Their eyes filled up with tears.
Their hearts were crammed with thoughts of lamentation.


γέλως laughter/ γελάω laugh在最後五十行出現五次以上,似乎是雅典娜的主意,讓他們笑,狂笑,猛笑,笑瘋,笑到想哭,笑到無法控制,笑到內心塞滿憂傷。
口裡含著還帶血的肉,這樣大力笑,是不是笑到噴血?
    此時,Theoclymenus再一次重申預言,但是是直接對笑瘋的求婚者說;

ἆ δειλοί, τί κακὸν τόδε πάσχετε; νυκτὶ μὲν ὑμέων
εἰλύαται κεφαλαί τε πρόσωπά τε νέρθε τε γοῦνα.
οἰμωγὴ δὲ δέδηε, δεδάκρυνται δὲ παρειαί,
αἵματι δ᾽ ἐρράδαται τοῖχοι καλαί τε μεσόδμαι:
εἰδώλων δὲ πλέον πρόθυρον, πλείη δὲ καὶ αὐλή,
ἱεμένων Ἔρεβόσδε ὑπὸ ζόφον: ἠέλιος δὲ
οὐρανοῦ ἐξαπόλωλε, κακὴ δ᾽ ἐπιδέδρομεν ἀχλύς.
(Odyssey 20. 352-357)

O you miserable men, what troubles
are you suffering now? Your heads, your faces,
your lower limbs are shrouded in the night.
You’re on fire with grief, faces wet with tears,
fine pedestals and walls have gobs of blood,
the porch is full of ghosts, so is the yard—
ghosts rushing in the dark to Erebus.
Up in the sky the sun has disappeared—
an evil mist is covering everything.
Erebos, 黑暗之地,地上通往冥府之路,也就是通向死亡的途徑。當人太自以為是的時候,外在的警告已然無效。這群追求者,不但不聽警告,還要驅逐Theoclymenus,他已盡責規勸大家,就向Telemachus 告別,離開。

  再一次,嘲笑,笑Telemachus收留沒用的乞丐,收留說廢話的預言家,還不如把他們送去Σικελοὺς,還可以增加收入。還創一個詞: κακόξενος unfortunate in guests,應該是說,Telemachus有這些客人,真是可憐。真的,不過指的是這群求婚找者。ΣικελοὺςSicily,古代西西里島。
   其實,嘲笑對手的人,已經輸一半了。Telemachus根本不理會,靜靜地與父親相看一眼。
   Penelope出場,本卷結束。
